  • Listening assignment:  Find a recording with your instrument as a soloist.  Look to the list on the right for ideas.
  • Practice Blues for the Closet and Moanin' equally.  We will be recording both.  Melody and solos!  Arc!
  • Bass/Guitar -  Have your basslines and chords memorized!
  • Memorize Moanin''

 

Weekly Assignment 3/10

  • Compare two recordings of:  Moanin' and Moanin'
  • Learn to playthe melody exactly as the 1st recording
  • Guitar listen to the piano comping on the recordings.  Learn some of the rhythms.
  • Scales! Scales!
  • Improvisers -- Practice with Blues for the Closet tracks above. Keep track of the 12 measure form! Guitar/Bass play bass lines and chords with recording
  • Create an arc to your solo.  Using dynamics, intensity, or range to provide motion.
  • Critique your playing on the recording of 3/3 and 3/10

  • Review class recording above
  • Listening assignment, find a jazz song to suggest for our third song
  • Scales!  F mixolydian (dominant) F BLues, Chromatic scale, Bb Blues scale
  • Improvisers -- Practice with tracks above. Keep track of the 12 measure form!

  • Listening Assignment:  Find a recording that is has a swing feel and is a blues. 
  • Bass/Guitar -- Play bass line at 120, 150, 180.  Learn chords, F7, Bb7, C7
  • Improvisers -- Practice with tracks above. Keep track of the 12 measure form!
  • Practice the chromatic scale the whole range of your instrument.  Keep practicing F Blues Scale.  
  • Play the melody of "Blues in the Closet" with youtube track .

  • Listening assignment:  find a recording with your instrument as one of the soloists.  Remember to find out the whole band.
  • Bring 5 different phrases using the blues scale
  • Write out melody we learned from last week.

  • Listening Assignment or this one.  Choose either youtube video. Describe the performance and the roles of each instrument.   Email me the review
  • Practice F Concert Blues Scale in the entire range of your instrument.
  • Using the blues scale, improvise four phrases (or licks) you like.  Write them down so they are ready to play and share on Wednesday
  • Send me an email your with your parents addresses
  • Bring a music notebook!
